Part 2 - Considering App Content

An eight part exploration into the essentials of app development

Who is going to supply the content for the app?

Where a mobile app contains any sort of information, the customer will usually supply this information. Ideally this information is available early in the project as it allow the app developer to optimise the app structure and inform the design of app content pages.

Static content vs. Dynamic app updates?

Static content vs. Dynamic app updates?

Static content:

The app has its content, e.g., text, images, video, embedded within it. If this content needs to be updated then new content will need to be updated by the app developer and a new version of the app uploaded to the app.

Dynamic app updates:

The app periodically connects to the server and downloads updates ensuring that the information in the app is kept up to date.

Is an App Content Management System required?

While Static content has the lowest up-front development costs, Dynamic app updates require a Content Management System (CMS), through which an app administrator can edit the in-app information. Dynamic app updates is the most flexible approach but with a higher up-front app development cost. However this cost may be recouped over time with less requirement to pay the app developer for content updates.
